Once There Were Flowers: Original Lyrics

Once there were flowers, now they are gone
Petal and blossom scorched by the sun
Summer is over, winter is come
Once there were flowers, now they are gone.

Once there was music, now it is gone
Silent the voice which once rose in song.
Silent the singer, silent the song
Once there was music, now it is gone.

Once there were leaves, but now they are gone
Strength will remain, though stripped to the bone.
There will be a new song: how can morning bring a light?
Love’s sacrifice, and dawn breaks the night.

Where is the song that gave such sweet bliss?
Where is the song that gave such as this?
Melody within us brings forth the song:
Hope is renewed; Love’s music lives on.

General Information

This work was composed in February 2011, and the text is original. It is one of a series of flower songs I have written that are available.

This is a companion piece to Love Will Make The Roses Grow, although the two works may not necessarily be performed together.

Once There Were Flowers was first performed in Ohio, USA, by the Ohio State Lima University Singers, as part of their Spring Concert in 2011.
